They file into the fellowship hall of Bethany Baptist Church in Chesapeake, many pausing to sign an attendance sheet. Men and women, senior citizens and young adults, some black, some white, fill the 50 or so cushioned seats until a few more chairs need to be found. Many drove here. Others own no car and have no driver's license either.

Green like the plant stems, hornworms easily blend in with foliage. They have coloring on their bodies that resembles eyes to confuse predators. Each has a single tail spike, which is the origin of the insect's name. The spike is red on a tobacco hornworm and blue on a tomato hornworm.
